Sulfur Odor Noticed in Some Old Mount Pleasant Locations

Monday, March 27, 2006

Old Village water is safe to drink but smells like sulfur.

Mount Pleasant Waterworks customers in the Old Village area may be experiencing a sulfur smell in the water since Reverse Osmosis Plant Number 1 came back on line Tuesday, March 21, 2006.

In September 2005, at 300 feet below ground, a 2 inch hole developed in the well casing of deep well 1. This hole allowed water, mud and sand from an upper aquifer, the Santee Limestone, to enter the well and flow into the lower aquifer, in the Middendorf formation.

While the water is safe to drink, what this means is that the water will smell like sulfur for a while until we can purge the Santee Limestone water from the Middendorf aquifer. This is a localized condition confined to the Old Village.

MPW staff is closely monitoring the situation and using different treatment methods to reduce the sulfur smell and taste. One method is chlorination, so you may experience an increase in the chlorine smell and taste until the sulfur goes away.

Staff tested the water prior to putting the plant on line and all bacteriological samples have been clear.
