Non-toxic, Harmless Smoke May Be Noticed Indoors and Outside
Routine smoke testing of the Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) wastewater system will begin in mid-June as a method to locate and correct potential defects in wastewater collection systems.
Customers will be notified when the test is scheduled in their area. Most of the smoke will be located outside. However, the non-toxic, harmless smoke used to inspect the system may appear indoors if plumbing vents, pipes or seals are defective or traps under the sinks, tubs or toilets are dry from non-use. Customers are urged to run the water for 30 seconds in all infrequently used drains on the announced day of testing in their area.
The smoke creates no fire hazard, will leave no residue or stains and has no effect on plant or animal life. Although harmless, residents are asked to avoid unnecessary exposure to the smoke as a precaution. Individuals with respiratory problems should take special precautions during testing.
This type of testing procedure helps MPW and its testing contractor, RJN Group, to locate sections of pipe where rainwater or groundwater may be entering the wastewater collection system. As a follow-up to the tests, preventive maintenance of the system will help increase efficiencies in wastewater operations and boost environmental protection efforts.
Customers are encouraged to call the contractor’s hotline phone number, 1-800-227-7756, or MPW’s customer response line, 388-1100, for answers to questions or concerns.
