Planning for Tomorrow, TODAY
It’s a new year and time for making resolutions and plans for the future. At Mount Pleasant Waterworks we are already planning for next year. In the water and wastewater industry being prepared and planning ahead is the only option for success. We have many plans and processes in place to ensure our services in the future including Asset Management, our Cost Recovery Policy and the Capital Improvement Plan. As Mount Pleasant grows so does our infrastructure.
Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) is focused on providing our customers with safe, clean, good-tasting drinking water today and in the future. We are equally committed to environmentally acceptable wastewater treatment that protects our water resources for current citizens, and generations to come. Our long-range Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is a tangible demonstration of the investment we are making in maintenance, expansion, and technological enhancement.
Each spring the public has the opportunity to learn about future projects being planned by Mount Pleasant Waterworks. You can provide input on the proposed projects or request new projects to benefit the community or environment.
How to Request a Project that Provides New Service
MPW may extend water and/or wastewater lines within the public rights-of-way and designated easements at its discretion. If the project is determined to be cost effective, the extension will be in accordance with our guidelines (mountpleasantwaterworks.com on the Development page).
Property owners present a “Petition for Service” to MPW. At least 2/3 of the existing residents or property owners are required for MPW to consider extending the infrastructure to provide service. Property owners can present the Petition for Service anytime, in addition MPW seeks public participation and requests at the annual Capital Improvements Plan Public Hearing held in February of each year.
The next public hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday February 19, 2007. MPW staff will review all petitions obtained through the year and determine if there are projects that should be included in the CIP.
Projects funded under these guidelines are prioritized by Health Hazard, Water Quality Problems, Willingness to participate, Ability to Pay, Public Water Available, Density (# of lots/acre), and if an innovative system is feasible.
All lines are sized to meet anticipated growth in the area. Also, all affected property owners desiring to connect to the water and/or wastewater lines for service will pay a pro rata share of the costs as determined by MPW.
How to Request a Project that Solves a Problem
Improving drinking water quality may be a reason to request a project. MPW provided drinking water dispensing stations to the residents of the unincorporated Sewee to Santee area after they asked the Commissioners for help at the 2006 CIP Public Hearing.
If you would like MPW to consider a project that would solve a water or environmental problem in your area (must be within MPW’s approved service area) please attend the February 19, 2007 public hearing at the MPW Operations Center, 1619 Rifle Range Road at 5:30 p.m. If you cannot attend then submit a letter within the 10-day comment period following the public hearing.
For more information on requesting a project please visit our website at mountpleasantwaterworks.com.
