Plan Now for Household Water Safety

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Important Steps Before Hurricane Approaches

Local residents are urged to implement a household water safety plan as Hurricane Ernesto approaches the Carolina coast.

“Every household needs a detailed plan to ensure safety and that plan should begin with a supply of clean drinking water,” said Mel Bennett, Mount Pleasant Waterworks’ (MPW) Emergency Management Director.

To aid Mount Pleasant residents MPW has provided 1 gallon plastic containers at Reverse Osmosis Plants 2 and 3. Fresh Reverse Osmosis water is available for free at the dispensing stations located at the plants. Free containers will be available from 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. on August 30, 2006. The dispensing stations are located on Labor Camp Road off of Venning Road and on 7th Avenue at Remley’s Point off of Mathis Ferry Road.

Here’s a quick look at planning tips you need to know:

Water Storage
  • Store regular tap water in half-gallon or one gallon containers. Fill containers completely. Mark containers with current date, discard within six months.
  • The average household should have one gallon of water per person per day for cooking and drinking. You should keep at least three days’ supply.
  • Bottled water (water purchased in a store) does not keep as well as normal tap water. Tap water contains disinfectants to guard against microbe growth.
  • Store volume water needs (for flushing toilets, cleaning, etc.) in the bathtub and other large containers.
