Mount Pleasant Waterworks
(MPW) will begin the next phase of the Old Village water line rehabilitation
project in February. W. Walsh Company, an MPW contractor, will perform
the work. This phase of the project is to be completed by June 2008.
Relining is a process where the contractor rehabilitates existing cast
iron water lines by removing the tuberculation and lining it with cement
mortar. Tuberculation is a deterioration of the cast iron water line from
the inside and causes a buildup, which restricts the flow of water and can
affect water quality.
Between 1930 and 1950, cast iron was the material of choice for water
lines. The project is part of MPW's on-going maintenance program to recondition
aging sections of the water system in the Old Village area of Mount Pleasant,
in order to ensure customers continue to receive quality and dependable
water service.
During the project, it is necessary to temporarily take water lines out
of service and connect residents along the route with a temporary water
supply. Connections are made to customer's existing service line from temporary
pipelines laid alongside the curbs on each side of the street.
In the project area, openings in the street pavement will allow access
to the water main and to accommodate the bypass pipelines running across
intersections and driveways. All openings will be covered when not in use
and will be resurfaced as soon as possible after the project is finished.
Every possible safety precaution will be taken and all work areas will be
barricaded and marked to prevent injury. Residents can help by avoiding
the work area as much as possible and cautioning others to watch their step.
If questions should occur as a result of this work, residents can contact
Mount Pleasant Waterworks at 843-884-9626.
Starting in February of 2008, MPW will upgrade or replace the water mains
on the following streets:
- - Goblet
- - Lorenzo
- - Ellis
- - Glencoe
- - Center St. (from Goblet to Glencoe)
- - Kathryn
- - McCants (from Simmons to Middle)
- - Pitt (from McCants to Williams St.)
- - Speight
- - Middle
Yonge Street, Chicco Street and Pierates Cruze will be on a bypass system
due to their location, but the lines servicing these streets do not need
to be rehabilitated.
