At the October Regular Commission Meeting the Commissioners of Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) made the following changes to the Discontinuation of Water Service Policy regarding delinquent payments:

• Allows the General Manager to suspend discontinuation of water service during periods of severe heat or cold conditions for public safety.

After severe heat conditions this past August, General Manager Clay Duffie suspended the normal cut-offs of water service in an effort to protect health and safety. “Extreme events of heat or freezing weather are not a good time to cut off customers’ water service,” said Duffie. “Their health and safety means more than collecting a past due water bill.”

• When it becomes necessary to terminate water service due to a lack of payment on an account, the following must occur prior to service being restored:

The unpaid balance brought forward and the $55.00 reconnection fee must be received in our office during normal business hours. (Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.) Once the delinquent account is brought up to date, a Service Technician will then be dispatched to restore service.

In the past, MPW would send a technician to restore service in the evening with a promise to pay the next day. Beginning in January 2008, Service Technicians will only restore water service when the account has been made current.

Service Technicians do not accept payment.
