Boil Water Advisory for Highway 17 North Area of Mount Pleasant

September 12, 2008

Neighborhoods and surrounding areas include: Charleston National, Park West, Copahee, Darrell Creek, Commonwealth, Paradise Island, Whitehall Terrace, Alston Point

Advisory is Precautionary as Officials Await Test Results

12:00 p.m. - Mount Pleasant Waterworks customers who live in the Highway 17 area from Charleston National subdivision north are advised to boil water for drinking purposes for the next 24 hours in response to potential water contamination from a water main break that caused system pressure to drop. The advisory is precautionary as we continue to test the drinking water. You will receive a Repeal of the Boil Water Advisory when testing is complete and the water is considered safe to drink without boiling.

Low system pressures resulted Friday when a contractor hit a major water line causing a break near Charleston National. Crews have isolated the leak and are working to repair the break now. Following an intense flushing of the distribution system, bacteriological samples will be collected and analyzed by the lab. Lab results from samples taken will be reported 24 hours after the samples are taken and the Advisory may be extended or repealed at that time.

Residents are welcome to use the free drinking water dispensing stations located at: Reverse Osmosis Plant 2 Seventh Avenue (off Mathis Ferry Road) Reverse Osmosis Plant 3 Labor Camp Road (off Venning Road)

How to Purify Water
  • Boiling: Boil vigorously for 3 to 5 minutes
  • Purification Tablets: Purchase from drug store, follow directions.
  • Hypochlorite (Standard Household) Bleach: Unscented liquid household bleach can be used. It contains Hypochlorite, usually 5.25%. Use 8 drops per gallon of water. Let stand for a minimum of 30 minutes before using. Do not use granular bleach.
  • Tincture of Iodine: Same as bleach.
